Tune Ups
Before 1980 and the advent of BMW’s maintenance regime as codified in the Service One and Two, cars like the venerable 2002 were serviced every 8,000 miles. This service consisted of a spark plug and points change, valve adjustment, and a series of inspections and adjustments.
By the time the 2nd through 12th owners got a hold of that 2002 the “8,000 Mile Service” became, a “tune up when they needed it”. This change is perfectly understandable for a number of reasons; 8,000 miles comes along pretty quickly.
To properly tune an older car, whether it is a carbureted or injected 2002, CS or Bavaria, we first assess its condition and needs.
Typically we perform all of the following at minimum:
- Change spark plugs
- Adjust valves
- Replace valve cover gasket
- Change oil and filter
- Adjust carburetor
- Injection pump and linkages as necessary
These beloved BMW vehicles are now at a minimum 30+ years old and they can be in varying states of condition that often dictates what should be done to put these car back in a proper state of tune.
